About
The Sequence and Private Teaching

The Y Intercept is a Primary Maths sequence like no other.
My name is Bridget, and I have been developing and using The Sequence for nearly 15 years.
Without it, I would be lost as to what I have taught and what I need to teach next. Or, more importantly:
What does a student know, and what do they need to know next?
Knowing this is essential for building capable maths students.
The Y Intercept is my way of sharing this with other teachers and schools, firstly to prevent gaps, and secondly as intervention when it's too late.

Every unit and lesson in order &
mapped to the Victorian Curriculum
The Story of The Sequence
I remember teaching a student mixed and improper fractions. I could see they had not yet consolidated the ability to compare a fraction to a whole. This small gap in understanding is powerful enough to overload a student and make it incredibly hard to learn the day's concept, which ultimately sits on top of the knowledge they are missing.
My solution to this was to ensure students were explicitly taught this skill of comparing a fraction to a whole. This needed the same importance and attention as all other parts of fractions, yet too often it is missed.
Now imagine this scenario across every lesson, every day, of every year in every classroom. Those small but very detrimental missed steps gradually compound. The student slowly starts to loose connection with the lessons they are being taught.
The Sequence I have developed ensures all the smaller missed steps of each concept are taught explicitly, in order and broken down into the right amount. No teacher has time to do this themselves, but every teacher knows how to teach once they have what they need.

The Sequence
Everything in The Sequence has been taught to students, revised, and taught again. This has been used privately and in the classroom for over a decade.
I still teach with it every day.
Tutoring
I teach primary students privately in Yarraville and online. My clients are often falling behind and may also have SLD characteristics or diagnoses.
